1G
1G refers to the First Generation of cellular technology. 1G was the analogue networks setup from the 1950's by individual countries.
2G
2G refers to the Second Generation of cellular technology. 2G also known as GSM was developed and released in 1991 in Europe.
It is the most popular cellular network in the world to this current date, 2005.
3G
3G refers to the Third Generation of cellular technology. There was obviously a 1G and 2G before this.
3G promises a world wide cellular network and a high speed connection which you can setup video conversation with other users.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a wireless connection that you can setup between 2 or more various electronic devices.
GPRS
GPRS stands for General Pocket Radio Service. This is an extension to GSM (2.5G) which is a high speed connection which is used by wireless devices to connect o the Internet.
Only suitable for sending messages and surfing the Internet as it sends bursts of Information rather than a continuous stream.
GSM
GSM is short for Groupe Speciale Mobile, or Global System for Mobile Communications. The Europeans developed this as a European Cellular Network. But it has become bigger than and it features in over 60 countries throughout North America, Asia as well as Europe.
Java
Java is an object orientated programming language which has great use over the Internet. Java on the Internet are in various forms:
- Midlets are small programs intended for wireless devices.
- JSP's are small code, embedded in webpages to do a function and is executed on the server.
- Applets are small graphical programs that sit on a web page that can tell the time, calculate mathematical etc.
- Servlets are small scripts that have a process no more.
